Racing with dotTrackIt.
dotTrackIt was originally designed to provide all the marine tracking services and race visualisations for ocean yacht racing. The dotTrackIt tracking software and race analysis system was successfully used on the Clipper 09/10 Round The World Race
dotTrackIt was used to track 10 ocean going yachts as they left Hull in September 2009 and raced around the world covering over 40,000 mile during the 10 month race. Clipper were looking to for a solution that gave them the a world class leading race tracking system that would be used by the race management team and by the marketing and media teams to help them maintain the high levels of public interest in the race. The system used a variety of active tracking devices on board each vessel which trasmitted positional data via the IRIDIUM and the INMARSAT Sat-C & Sat-D networks to constantly acquire and update the positional database and calculate the race data, distance between boats, distance to finish, distance made good etc.
The advanced active tracking and racing components have also recently been used to support the the 2010 Round Britain rowing race and Bear Grylls' successful navigation through the North West Passage.
For online active events, tracking data can be automatically acquired from devices to automatically update the race however the system is also able to integrate data from personal GPS devices into the race. For high profile races dotTrackIt is able to acquire and automatically merge the data from multiple GPS devices into a single track.
Members who extend their membership to full racing can operate multiple events and each event can consist of a series of races with a number of competitors.
The addition of tracking to a race or event gives the organisers the perfect tool that can be used to maintain interest and excitement in an event over a long period of time. The inclusion of tracking means that there is always something new on the web site giving people a reason to return and increasing traffic. This year the race tracker helped Clipper increase traffice by over 600% over the previous race.
The software allows entrant data to be created, routes created, race starts and finishes.
The additional capabilities of the racing components enhance the track replay services by normalising all the track data to ensure that the track replay is synchronised and enthusiasts can determine who is in the lead. The viewers can be augmented with weather data data which is overlaid on the map which automatically tracks the competitors as they move around the globe.
There are additional features such as mini-viewers which can be embedded within other web sites and more sophisticated race viewers that are more suited to handling large numbers of competitors.
